Description and Reasons for Notification:

This site is a locality of field eryngo Eryngium campestre, a British Red Data Book* species afforded special protection under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. Field Eryngo is now confined to only 5 sites in Britain.

The site comprises a grass field dominated by rye-grass Lolium perenne with a range of herbs typical of an agriculturally improved sward. The field overlies Devonian slates and siltstones being generally steep, well-drained and facing a north-easterly direction.

There are three populations of field eryngo present and these occupy the lower slopes of the site. Detailed recording has shown them to be expanding.
